Patricia N. "Pat" Battle (born December 9, 1959) is an African American television journalist at NBC's network affiliate station, WNBC-TV, in New York City, New York.
She is WNBC-TV's New Jersey Bureau Reporter; a co-anchor of Weekend Today in New York; and occasional substitute anchor for Today in New York. Battle joined WNBC-TV in 1996 as a general-assignment reporter with a focus on New Jersey. Prior to joining WNBC-TV, she covered New Jersey for WCBS-TV (New York City) as well as WCAU-TV (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), and hosted public affairs programs for the New Jersey Network, a PBS affiliate. However, Battle's journalism career began in print as a reporter for the Asbury Park Press, Asbury Park, New Jersey.
Battle grew up in Neptune Township, New Jersey, where her mother was a member of the township committee and served as police commissioner. battle graduated from Neptune High School in 1977, where she was a cheerleader.[1]
Battle attended the University of Maryland, College Park, School of Journalism, College Park, Maryland, and is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists. She won a 2005 New York Regional Emmy Award for Political Programming for her work on the U.S. presidential primary edition of WNBC-TV's What Matters.[2]
During a live remote broadcast introducing her taped coverage of a shark attack at a New Jersey beach on WNBC-TV's Live at Five, a listener of The Opie & Anthony Show (a talk-radio program) interrupted her broadcast as part of the radio program's "Assault on the Media" campaign. Battle ignored the interrupter but WNBC-TV did not have a live shot after her pre-recorded package completed, which is standard procedure when persons attempt to disrupt live broadcasting. Since then she has become a popular reference on this radio program with her name used in word play including "Pat Battlefield 2", "You sunk my Pat Battleship!" and "Pat Battlestar Galactica".
She is a resident of Teaneck, New Jersey, and is married to WABC-TV reporter Anthony Johnson.[3]
In October 2010 Battle publicly revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and undergone a lumpectomy.[4]
